Kenneth Hawes (Membership Review)
Since the actions of individuals reflect upon the group as a whole with
which they associate, members of SOAR have the final say as to who
their fellow club members will be. To streamline the process of
considering potential new members, applications for membership in
SOAR are reviewed and approved/rejected by the Membership Review
Chairman. If any club member in good standing challenges the ruling of
the Membership Review Chairman, the membership application then
goes to a vote during a general club meeting. A two-thirds (2/3) majority
of attending and/or absentee members is required to reverse the decision
of the Chairman.
CURRENT SOAR MEMBERS - 2015
While some may view this approach as exclusive, it just makes sense that the membership has a say with whom
they choose to associate. We as a chapter have found that this proactive approach is much more effective than
the open-door, open-wallet policy that many other clubs choose to use which usually leads to the need for a
reactive response to incidents within the membership and the community. Also, each member of SOAR is
allowed to vote on decisions that effect the entire group and there is no 'non-voting membership' class, as we
believe that all club members should have a say over club policy.
All active SOAR pilots and current officers are required to also be current full members of the United States
Hang Gliding and Paragliding association. Contributors (usually non-rated students) are the exception. In either
case, besides acceptance by the current club members, an annual fee of $60.00 is required for local
membership, $30.00 for non-local membership and $100.00 for commercial membership.
